Basil may be a humble and common herb in the culinary world.  But in the magickal world, basil is one of the best herbs to have handy.  Whether you are casting a spell for prosperity, harmony, or protection, pull the basil out of your pantry and let it help you in your magickal workings.

From Where Does Basil Come?

Basil originally came from the tropical regions of central Africa and Southeast Asia.  A member of the mint family, it is used around the world as an herb for cooking.  The leaves of the plant are usually dried, and the crushed leaves introduced into recipes to add its flavoring to the dish.

Holy and lemon basil are usually used for Asian dishes, while other types of dishes, especially Mediterranean ones, use the Italian or sweet varieties.  The leaves of the plant are bright green and oval-shaped with a glossy look to them. The plants have a sweet aroma, especially the sweet basil plants.  Basil is easy to grow and is an excellent helpmate for tomato plants.

Fresh or Dried in Magick?

Dried basil is relatively inexpensive and readily found in most pantries.  Growing, harvesting, and drying the leaves is a relatively simple process and requires very little expertise.  If you have fresh basil available, it works well in mojo bags or on your altar.  The potency of your magickal workings will not be affected by using one over the other.

How to Use It in Magick

Basil is associated with the Element of Fire and the cardinal direction of South.  It is considered a masculine herb associated with drawing prosperity and harmony to a home or place of business.  You can utilize it also in spells for protection and cleansings.

If you are doing magickal workings in any of the following areas, basil will help you strengthen the energy of your intentions.

  • Wealth
  • Prosperity
  • Good luck
  • Harmony
  • Love
  • Sweeten a relationship (sweet basil)
  • Protection
  • Purification
  • Cleansing
  • Banish negative energy

For a Protection, Purification, or Cleansing Spray

Simmer 4 oz of water with 2 or 3 leaves of basil or 1 tablespoon of dried basil.  If you use dried basil, crush it in your hand before adding it to the water.  Add a pinch of sea salt and 2-3 drops of lemon essential oil.  Pour in a 4 oz spray bottle and label it appropriately.

  • Sprit this mixture around your door and window facings for protection.
  • Spray this mixture on tools, or water-safe crystals you need to cleanse.

In Candle Magic

If you perform candle magic, basil is an excellent addition when dressing the candle for one of the reasons above.  After drawing sigils into your candle, rub the candle with a bit of oil and a pinch of dried basil.  You can check out this post on Chime Candle Magic for more instructions.
