Humans cannot live without salt.  It is a vital part of our lives.  It’s a hard-working little crystal with many wondrous properties.  It also plays a starring role in Witchcraft with all its magickal uses.

Magickal Uses for Salt

Salt has as many magickal uses as there are witches who use it.  It is versatile and easily found in the pantry for all types of magickal work.

  • Protection—sprinkle it on your doorsteps and windowsills, create a magickal circle, or add it to a spell to help ward off evil spirits and negative energy.
  • Purification—salt acts as a purification agent.  If you bring new magickal tools into your life, purifying them with salt readies the items for your magickal intent.
  • Blessings— include salt to add spice to life or bring positive energy to a blessing
  • Absorb and repel negative energy–a bowl of salt can absorb the negative energy in your home or workspace.  It will also help to repel negative energy trying to enter.
  • Grounding—salt is the ultimate symbol of the Mother Earth.  If you need to feel connected to her, place a little in your hand and hold it between your palms before sprinkling it into your food.
  • Brings abundance—mix with green herbs such as basil for prosperity and wealth
  • Cleansing—salt helps in cleansing negative energies from crystals, magickal tools, or your space

Types of Salt to Use

The best kind of salt to use is the one you have.  There is no need to buy fancy ones unless you want to do so.  Witches of old were experts at making magic from the thing things they had on hand, and that idea still works today.

  • Table salt—readily available, use it for all your needs.
  • Himalayan pink salt—because of its pink color, it is a superb salt to use in spells for friendship and love.
  • Sea salt—it can represent the sea on your altar.  It is valuable for releasing negative energy.
  • Black salt—made from ashes or charcoal and salt.  It assists in protection and banishing.  Use a pinch in your mop water to wash away the negative energy in your home.
  • Black lava salt—this salt is a mixture of sea salt and lava charcoal.  It is useful for purification.
  • Epsom salt—healing in nature, it serves as a detoxifier in ritual baths.

It Is a Crystal

Because salt is crystalline, you can think of it as adding to your crystal collection.  Table salt can be utilized for the cleansing and clearing your crystals.  If you have some crystals needing their energies refreshed and the full moon isn’t out, place them in salt.  That will quickly cleanse them of past energy work and recharge them for next time.

Spilled Salt

While cooking dinner, you accidentally knock over the salt, and the tiny, white crystals spill out.  Quick!  Take a pinch and throw over your left shoulder to undo the bad luck of spilling such a precious commodity!

Salt, the Spice of Life

Without salt, we could not live.  It makes our lives possible while protecting us from harm.  It brings us abundance.  It flavors our food.  It has many remarkable uses in our lives.  No wonder it is a friend to Witches everywhere.

In It’s a Wonderful Life, the Bailey family brings wine, bread, and salt to bless the new home of the Martini family.  As the community gathers around with their good wishes, Mary Bailey says as part of the blessing of the new house, “Salt, that life may always have flavor.”  May your life always have flavor.

Until we meet again,
